Description of alarm devices
(Components for a Whole Building Security Solution)
Access Control System
The Access Control System is the workhorse in the overall security plan. It allows access to the parking area and building only to authorized residents who have a transmitter.
Each transmitter is has a unique code imbedded into it. When the button on the transmitter is pressed, the overhead door will open. If the transmitter is presented to a reader, the door beside it will open.
The system that is proposed gets rid of the need for keys. All doors that currently require a key will be switched over to the Access Control system. If a resident loses their transmitter, that particular transmitter is deleted from the system and a new transmitter is issued.
Consider the current system where if someone loses a key, the entire building is vulnerable until ALL the locks are re-keyed and new keys issued to everyone at a considerable expense ($5000 to $7000)
A prime target in multi-resident buildings is the parkade. The Access system protects the parkade not only at the man doors and overhead doors but also will not let unauthorized people go to the parkade via the elevator since the elevator has a reader on it as well.
Video Surveillance System
The main purpose of the Video Surveillance System is to back up the Access Control System. Vandal resistant dome cameras are placed at strategic points throughout the parkade and in public areas. This information is recorded on a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and is stored for approximately one week depending on the amount of activity.
The Video Surveillance System picks up things that the Access Control System can’t.
For example;
Consider the main lobby entrance. A particular resident may be using their transmitter to come through the door but may be habitually letting strangers come in after them. The Access Control System will not record this but the Video system will.
Consider the Overhead Gate. Everyone knows that they are supposed to stop and wait after they drive through the gate to make sure no one comes through after them. The Video System will show who does not perform this simple safety measure.
The Video System also records vandalism, theft (from mailboxes), as long as there is a camera viewing the area.
Security System
The security system is installed to backup both the Access Control System and the Video Surveillance system. Consider that one of the problems that many buildings have is the actual theft of the security equipment itself.
The Security System can have sensors in all of the Cameras so that if they are tampered with, sirens will sound and security will be called (if that option is approved).
The Security System can also be expanded to have sensors on the mailbox doors. Alpha Integrated has also installed systems for parkades where between the hours of 11PM and 6AM, the parkade is only accessable long enough to park your car or get in your car and leave as long as a valid transmitter is used before entering. Otherwise a siren will sound and a security guard is called.
Cost vs Benefits
Multi-Residential Building Security Systems are large systems protecting a lot of people. Listed below are some of the benefits you can expect once the system is installed.
Financial
- Reduced cost of repairs due to vandalism of building and personal property
- Increased property value due to lower crime activity in the building
- If a resident loses a transmitter, only that transmitter needs to be replaced instead of re-keying the entire building
- Less likely to incur the expense of fraud due to lost mail
Safety and Security
- Less likely to have a stranger lurking in the building
- Harder for strangers to get into building. If they do, there is a video record of it
- Less likely to have undesirables move into the building and cause problems
- Easier to identify problem residents
- Transmitters cannot be copied
- Transmitters are required to enter the building after a residents car is parked in the parkade. Therefore overhead door transmitters cannot be left in the car.
Convenience
- One device does it all. The transmitter not only opens the overhead door but also has the proximity chip built into it for accessing the readers on the doors in the building
