Cost-Effective Security Upgrades for Your Apartment in Surrey

If you live in Surrey, an area known to have a relatively high crime rate, security for your apartment is important for all of us. There are plenty of cost-effective security upgrades that you can do to enhance your apartment’s security. In today’s blog article, we are going to list for you some of the most common ones. Keep in mind that you have to follow the rules of your particular apartment complex or HOA depending on where you live.

1. Cover Your Windows

Use window treatments so people cannot easily see inside. This is especially important if you live on a ground or low floor. There is even film you can buy on a roll to cover windows so no one can see inside if you do not want to invest in blinds, curtains, or shades.

2. Lights on Timers

If you are not going to be home for several hours, put a couple of a lights on timers. You can buy an inexpensive timer at a big box hardware store. Or, if you already have a security system, putting lights on timers is something that could potentially be wired into an existing system.

3. Deadbolt

Put a deadbolt on your door if your apartment complex allows it, or at least rekey the one you have. If your door lock has a combination, then change it. Lock combinations and keys get stale after a while, when several people know how to get in and out.

4. Doorbell Camera

Install a camera in your door or doorbell. This can be wired into a security system, or you can also install something stand alone. This is particularly useful if someone comes to the door when you are not home.

5. Motion Sensor Cameras

These are great to have if you are allowed to have them. If anything moves outside, you will capture the image.

6. Window Locks

Make sure your window locks work, and if they do not, then add some. If you have an existing security system, sensors on the window can alert you if a window is opened, breached, or broken.
