Why Is Construction Site Theft Relatively High in Metro Vancouver?

Construction site theft continues to be high in Metro Vancouver because construction is still relatively high there. If you build it, then they will come to steal from you. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation estimates 26-27,000 starts in 2026 for building projects, that is in line with the past few years, a serious uptick since 2000. While the real estate market does seem to be cooling, there is always a lag in construction because permitting can take a long time, so the construction itself reflects permitting that started a year or so previously.

When it comes to theft, construction sites have a unique vulnerability:

They often have large footprints.

They often do not have great security.

They can be hard to secure.

They may have changing shapes and perimeters as the building progresses.

There are often lots of valuable materials and equipment and tools left overnight.

And there are usually lots of times the area is left unoccupied: nights, weekends, and holidays.

And construction takes time, so the sites are an attractive nuisance to criminals for weeks or months or years.

It used to be that criminals would target things like copper wire. Criminals are bolder now. Since prices have risen since COVID on all building materials, where possible, criminals will steal bathroom fixtures, drywall sheets, plywood, lumber, and anything else they can grab.

This is why owners of building sites in Vancouver should take extra security precautions to protect their assets. Your construction site should have cameras mounted at strategic places to capture all the activity and comings and goings at the site. Remote operators should be looking at the images and using AI to interpret them. You need a sophisticated security company familiar with both the area and the problem at hand—like us at Alpha Integrated.
