Determining Key Areas for Video Surveillance of an Outdoor Site

There are many considerations when determining what are the key areas for video surveillance outside. Whether outside a building or some other outdoor site, today in our blog article, we will go over what are the key areas to include for video surveillance when setting up a new system outside (or revamping an older one.)
Entrance and Exit
The most obvious first on the list are all entrances and exits because comings and goings are important especially in the event of following up on crime.
Perimeter
The perimeter of the area is also important. This could mean the property lines around a building or it might mean capturing fences if unauthorized access is a problem.
Meeting Areas
Wherever people congregate, there should be video. This could mean a picnic area or where people get in and out of cars. If people tend to congregate somewhere, then it should be covered by video.
Parking Lots
Video surveillance of parking lots is important as a deterrent to crime and break-ins. People should feel safe getting into and out of cars, and video will help convey the message that safety is important to the property owner.
Assets
If there are high-value assets on the property, then these should be covered by video. This might mean special machinery or even dumpsters if illegal dumping is an issue.
These are just some of the considerations when planning the video surveillance of an outdoor area. Be aware that cameras should be placed sufficiently high off the ground to prevent tampering or theft. In addition, weather-proof housing for cameras may or may not be needed. There will need to be enough light for the cameras to capture images, or infra-red technology can be used.
