Differences Between Commercial and Residential Security Systems

There are many differences between commercial and residential security systems. In today’s blog article, we want to briefly discuss what some of these differences are. The most obvious differences would be of size and complexity.

Size

Commercial spaces are typically larger than residential ones. For this reason, a commercial system would typically need more hardware: more wiring, more cameras, more sensors, as examples. This is one reason why a commercial system might be more expensive than a residential one. Square footage would be the first parameter. How large of an area is being protected.

Complexity

The next big difference would be one of complexity. A residential security system may not need multiple layers of redundancy including different types of sensors, including ones for fire or flooding, for example, sensors on doors and windows, and sensor on equipment being turned on or off.

In addition, for a business, such as a warehouse, there may be multiple persons who need to monitor the security or be alerted in the case of a breach.

Value Needing Protection

Another important consideration is the value of assets needing protection. The more valuable the area or assets are that one is protecting, the more one is likely going to spend to protect it. For businesses, one may want live people monitoring the security 24/7, whereas this may not be necessary to protect a small home that is only concerned with a break-in while the homeowners are out for the evening. Residential systems often require only an automated monitoring compared to the live monitoring of a large commercial space.
